Sida support for health-related research on HIV and AIDS

support for health-related research on HIV and AIDS
Sida has been supporting health research on HIV and AIDS and related sexually transmittable infections, relevant for the situation in developing countries, since mid-1980s. Over the last few years, Sida has increased the total funding to research on HIV and AIDS and the number of funded research projects within this area. This has resulted in stimulation of strong research environments and testing of innovative ideas. A new call for continued research proposals was announced in June 2007. The focus of the call was to prioritise collaborative projects by research teams with complementary competencies, as well as, innovative and goal-oriented research. Projects building on previously supported projects were also prioritised. Also of importance was the relevance to the contextual situation, the on-going research in, as well as the collaboration with researchers from highly affected and low income countries.
Below is a list of the HIV research projects that have received funding for 2008-2009. Decision letters with the expert group's assessments and motivation for the decision was sent by post on 18 December 2007 to all applicants. Contracts to those applicants who have been awarded funding will be sent separately in early January 2008. If you should have any further questions after receiving the decision letter, please contact Catharina Maijgren-Steffensson, at: Catharina.Maijgren-Steffensson@sida.se.
(Please note on the list of awarded projects below ONLY contracts and a decision letter awarding funding received by post is a guarantee for awarded support. Errors in the project database and lists below can occur.)

Bilateral research co-operation
Swedish development cooperation has identified the need to strengthen national universities. They are the most important focal points for research training and for producing and disseminating scientific knowledge.
However, low-income countries can rarely afford to prioritise scientific research. Sweden is one of few donor countries that support the development of local research capacity. Such capacity has a wide definition, comprising training of Ph.D. students in research projects, building laboratories and modern library facilities, setting up local research funds and mechanisms for allocating priority among research proposals, and dialogue on reform of universities and national research systems.

Thematic research
Sida supports thematic research addressing issues of key concern to meet the challenge of poverty alleviation. Support is directed to some 30 international organisations and 35 networks and groups acting as nodes for regional collaboration.
The support aims to facilitate cooperation between scientists and organisations in various regions (such as southern Africa, Central America etc), thereby contributing as well to strengthening of research capacity in collaborating institutions. Efforts are concentrated to solve common thematic research problems in health, social science, natural resources and environment, natural sciences and technology.
